Membership Categories

Individual IAS Membership Categories:

Professional members pay full dues and receive the Journal, Bulletin, and all general mailings. Can vote in elections and at the business meeting.

Fellow - Nominated by the membership and elected by the Board of Directors from those members who have provided meritorious service to the Academy and effective promotion of science in Iowa . Fellows remain Fellows as long as they maintain membership. This is an honor with the same privileges and responsibilities as a Professional Member. The board of directors solicits nominations for Fellow from the membership in the fall of each year.

Distinguished Fellow - The Distinguished Fellow award is the highest honor the Academy can bestow upon an individual, and is intended to recognize exceptional scholarly activity and/or exceptional service to the scientific community at the national and international levels. Although the individual need not be a current resident of Iowa, his/her background and accomplishments should, in some manner, relate to Iowa. Life membership is bestowed to all Distinguished Fellows. See Distingquished Awards for more information.

Life Member/Fellow - Any member or Fellow may become a life member by paying 15 times the current dues in one lump sum payment or donating $1000 to the Benchmark fund (in one-four annual payments). A life member is exempt from future dues, but must pay for registration to the Annual Meeting. A Life Member/Fellow receives the Journal and all general mailings. A Life Member can vote in elections and at the business meeting.

Emeritus Member/Fellow - Any person who has been a member in good standing for 15 consecutive years (or is a life member) and has retired may request Emeritus status. Emeritus Members do not pay annual dues and receive free registration to the Annual Meeting. Emeritus Members do pay for meals, tour fees, etc. An Emeritus Member/Fellow receives the Journal and all other general mailings.

Student Member - Student members must be currently enrolled full-time in an institution of higher learning. Student members may be asked to provide proof of full-time status. Student Members pay 1/2 the annual membership dues and 1/2 the Annual Meeting registration fee. Students are non-voting members of the Academy.

All members in individual membership categories (above) may join up to 4 sections of the Iowa Academy of Science.

Group IAS Membership Categories:

Corporate Member - Coming Soon.

Institutional Member - Institutions of Higher Learning and Nonprofit Organizations may become Institutional Members of the Academy. Institutional Members (currently) pay $125/year. Institutional Membership privileges include a plaque, a subscription to the Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science for the institution library, and one comp registration to the Annual Meeting for an administrator. Corporate and Institutional Members do not have voting privileges.

IJAS Membership Categories:

Iowa Junior Academy of Science School Membership - Schools may join the Iowa Junior Academy of Science. IJAS schools receive a copy of the IJAS handbook and the STARS Manual . One school membership extends to a high school and all of its feeder schools. All students in IJAS member schools may submit grant proposals for consideration by the Student Programs Committee. IJAS member schools may nominate one or more 12th grade students for the Outstanding Science Student Award (OSSA), one metal is available to each school each year. See the handbook for other benefits.

Science teacher with two 5th grade GLOBE Students.Iowa Junior Academy of Science Individual Membership - Individual students may join the IJAS for a reduced fee. Individual IJAS students receive a handbook and a STARS manual . Individual IJAS students may submit grant proposals for consideration by the Student Programs Committee.
