Iowa Junior Academy of Science Membership

Membership in the Iowa Junior Academy of Science is open to any student in grades K-12. Students may hold membership as an individual or participate in a school membership. One school membership extends to a high school and all of the feeder schools that serve that high school. School membership shall be restricted to those students within the member schools, organized for extracurricular learning experiences in science. Each school shall have a sponsor/contact, who must be a science teacher in the school system, a scientist resident in the community, or co-sponsors with equal qualifications.

Membership will offer privileges of participation in many of the IJAS activities and is required for students to participate in programs sponsored by the IJAS. Opportunities for input in the planning and implementation of activity programs are extended to members.

School Membership: (the enrollment of individual students as a group, not necessarily organized) at the current rate of $30.00 per school year. One membership fee covers one high school and all the schools that feed into that high school. The applying school must provide IAS with contact information for each eligible school.

School Membership Benefits : One copy of each IJAS publication (IJAS Handbook and STARS Manual) delivered to each school within the membership. All participating students (7th-12th grades) within member schools are eligible to submit proposals for Starr Student Research Grants. Each member high school may nominate one or more students to receive an OSSA metal (one student selected from each nominating member school). Member schools may send students and chaperones (max. 2 adults/10 students) to the IAS Annual Meeting (as non-competitors) for the costs of meals (registration fee waived).

Individual Membership: dues are $5.00 per school year. The individual membership is designed to allow a single student from a non-IJAS school to participate in the IJAS program.

Individual Membership Benefits : Individual student IJAS members receive personal copies of the IJAS Handbook and STARS Manual. Individual members are eligible to submit a proposal for a Starr Student Research Grant. These students receive personal communications about IJAS events. Students who receive a Starr Student Research Grant and those whose schools are not a member are encouraged to become individual members.
