Iowa Junior Academy of Science

The Iowa Junior Academy of Science was founded by IAS in 1932. The major objective of the Junior Academy is to promote the study of and participation in science by elementary and secondary students and teachers. IJAS Programs are developed to:

Award Winning IJAS Member Cory displays his research project notebook.  Cory, a Sophmore in 2006-2007, is one of many Iowan Middle and High School students who have presented and competed in the Iowa Academy of Science Annual Meeting.•  promote an understanding of the importance of science and scientific research to meet many essential needs of society

•  encourage students with interest and aptitude in science to participate in science research

•  promote formal and informal discussions of science and scientific research by student groups, including teachers and members of the senior Academy, as appropriate

•  help students explore career opportunities in science

The conduct of affairs and programs of the IJAS is the responsibility of the Student Programs Committee, appointed by the Board of Directors of the Iowa Academy of Science.

IJAS members can apply for Starr Student research grants of up to $200 to assist them in their science fair research, organize a scientist visit at their school through the visiting scientist program, get tips about how to prepare for a science fair on the IJAS Wiki, and use the STARS Event calendar to keep track of science opportunities across the state. IJAS high schools can nominate seniors to win an Outstanding Science Student Award metal and certificate. Join today! Current members log into the wiki to see what's new.

National Youth Science Camp

The National Youth Science Camp originated in 1963 as a part of West Virginia's Centennial Celebration. NYSC annually hosts 100 highly talented science students, two from each state in the nation. These students are guests of the state of West Virginia while they participate in the three-week camp. High school principals are encouraged to nominate their top students. The IAS Student Programs Committee will select two delegates and two alternates to represent Iowa. These students will be recognized on the Iowa Academy of Science website. An application form for NYSC is included on page 28 of this handbook or may be downloaded from the IAS website.  Membership in IJAS is NOT required to apply for NYSC. PLEASE NOT THE DEADLINE FOR IOWA IS MARCH 14th for 2008.
