IAS Annual Meeting History

The 2005 IAS Annual Meeting will be hosted by Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The last time Cornell College hosted an Annual Meeting was the 91st session in 1979. Some of the details of the event are provided below:

A short course on Natural History Photography was offered as a pre-conference workshop.

The conference began with a "Celebration of Nature", a 50-minute multi image slide presentation utilizing three screens and sound track. The presentation, give by Floyd Sanford of Coe College, was designed to create a mood and heighten awareness of biology in general and environmental concerns in particular.

Philip B. Secor, President of Cornell College gave a welcoming address.

General Session speakers included Dr. Edward J. Stanek (Iowa Energy Policy), Dr. Reese Jenkins (Rutgers University), Dr. Philip H. Abelson (Editor of Science, AAAS), and Dr. James Van Allen. Dr. Van Allen's talk focused on exploration of the planets. Dr. Abelson presented a comparison of industrial and academic research. Dr. Jenkins presented on the 100th Anniversary of Edison's invention of the incandescent light. Dr. Stanek spoke to the need for a national energy policy.

Friday symposium choices were Food Safety and Science and Public Policy. Other Friday afternoon activities includes a tour of Rockwell International and a solar energy workshop for K-12 teachers.

Other special sessions included: History and Philosophy of Science (a two-part session) and Safety in Science Classrooms, Laboratories, and Field Environments.

There were a total of 13 poster papers presented and 163 oral presentations. The botany section, which had 30 presentations, had to present in two concurrent sessions.

Paul Christiansen was chair of the 1979 Annual Meeting. The local planning committee included Addison Ault, Cecil Dam, Ann Dundon, Ed Hill, Eugene Hinman, Thomas E. Rogers, and Neil Wylie.

The President of IAS was Karl E. Goellner of Coe College.

The program cover was light blue.
