Erica D. Larson, Ph.D.
Title: Science Curriculum Consultant, Grant Wood Area Education Agency
Professional Experience: For the past five years I have served K-12 schools in the seven county GWAEA area as a science curriculum consultant. Prior to that I served for one year as a Secondary Science Methods Teaching Assistant in the University of Iowa Secondary Science Education program. And prior to that I served as a secondary science educator for 20 years: 13 in Tipton CSD, Tipton Iowa; 2 in Farmington, MN; 2 in Muncie, Indiana, and; 3 in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Special Academy Activities & Recognition: I have been a member of the Q section of the Iowa Academy of Science since 1986. In chronological order I have served as an IAS Board member, Iowa Science Teachers Section of the Iowa Academy of Science Fall Conference Chair, Past-President, President, President-Elect, Secretary (for two terms) and Regional Director (for 3 terms). Last year I was awarded the honor of Fellow to the Iowa Academy of Science.
Other Special Activities & Recognition:Currently I am serving as the Project Director on a three-year Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) grant titled: SMARTS (Science and Mathematics Avenues for Renewal for Teachers and Students. I am completing my last year of three consecutive terms on the Iowa American Association of University Women (AAUW) State Board as the Public Policy Director. I was awarded an Eleanor Roosevelt Fellowship by the American Association of University Women in 1995.
Candidate Statement: IAS affords a unique opportunity for scientists and science educators to collaborate on a common mission to further scientific research, science education, public understanding of science and recognition of excellence in these endeavors. I pledge to donate my time, talents and service toward achieving that mission.

John Pearson
Botanist/Plant Ecologist, Iowa Department of Natural Resources
Professional Experience: Botanist/Plant Ecologist for Iowa Department of Natural Resources since 1985, involved with natural areas inventory, threatened and endangered species, state preserves, and state parks. Plant ecologist for The Nature Conservancy 1982-1985 for South Dakota Natural Heritage Program. Doctoral degree in Botany from University of Wyoming (1982), master's degree in Forestry from Southern Illinois University (1978), bachelor's degree in Psychology from Oakland University (1973).
Special Academy Activities: has served as chair of Botany and Conservation sections; served on Conservation Committee
Other Special Activities and Recognition: co-author of The Guide To Iowa's State Preserves; co-author of "Floristic composition and conservation status of fens in Iowa" (JIAS 99(2-3):41-52); member of interagency team for the Loess Hills Special Resource Study (National Park Service 2002)
Candidate Statement: A challenge for the Iowa Academy of Science will be
to continue to provide leadership for science and science teaching issues while faced with a general trend toward membership of scientists in national, specialized professional societies and decreasing participation in state organizations.
Candidate for IAS Board of Directors: Mark L. Anderson
Office of the State Archaeologist - the University of Iowa
Professional Experience: I have been employed for the past 18 years as a Project Archaeologist, at the OSA, conducting archaeological surveys across all parts of Iowa. I currently serve with the Highway Archaeology Program (1989-) working under contract with the Iowa Department of Transportation. From 1987-1989, I served the General Contract Program working under a variety of competitively secured contracts. During 1985-86, I participated in a National Parks Service pilot project for the State Historic Preservation Office. I began my collegiate career at the University of Oregon then completed my undergraduate and conducted my graduate studies at Ball State University.
Special Academy Activities and Recognitions: I have been an IAS member for 16 years, the past 14 being consecutive. I currently serve as Anthropology Section chair and have served twice previously. I served as a judge for the JIAS presentations at the 2005 Cornell College meeting. At the 2000 Des Moines meeting I co-chaired a special symposium with the Iowa Science Teachers Section entitled "Evolution and the Science Classroom." I have present papers on a variety of research projects during 10 of my 16 years of IAS membership.
Other Special Activities & Recognitions: In 2005, I was awarded a Mary Jo Small fellowship from the University of Iowa to present a paper at the Society of Historical Archaeology Conference held in York, England. From 2003-2005, I served as an inaugural member of Ball State University Geology Department's Alumni Advisory Board. In 2000, I was part of a Governors Volunteer Award for a joint project by the Central Chapter of the Iowa Archaeology Society and the State Historical Society of Iowa.
Candidate Statement: The Iowa Academy of Science is the premiere scientific body in the state. We collectively hold a responsibility and obligation to the citizens the state to provide quality leadership in all matters concerning science education, research, and application. If elected I will serve assiduously, with this in mind.

Research Interests: Middle school practice, constructivist teaching strategies (mainly in science), national standards, assessment, concept mapping, adolescent nutrition, national certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, gender equity in the science classroom.

Candidate Statement: Now, more than ever, the Iowa Academy of Science is needed to build bridges of understanding between our different branches of science and to the general public. Two priorities should be to encourage more graduate student papers at the Annual Meeting and to support public dialogs on science.

Special Academy Activities: I have not been involved much with recent academy initiatives due to the fact that I have just recently resurfaced on the science scene. As a teacher and now as a consultant I take pride in my academy membership and encourage others to join as well.
Special Activities: Since starting my position with the AEA, I have been involved with a number of professional development initiatives and have created opportunities for science teachers to obtain resources and trainings.
- Participant / Supporter in a six day Science Inquiry Institute led by Dr Yager from the University of Iowa
- Arranged Professional Development for nearly 160 K-8 teachers from AEA 267 on Using FOSS (Full Option Science System) Kits and Inquiry -Based Instruction.
- Created a Science Inquiry Celebration that has been held in this region for the past two years. This opportunity provides teachers with the chance to hear from science teaching experts, review science teaching resources and to network with colleagues.
Candidate Statement: Science education is moving to the forefront in the State of Iowa and around the world. Current issues such as NCLB science score reporting requirements and the state science initiative (Every Learner Inquires-E.L.I.) will be instrumental in making this shift. The collaboration between science professionals, colleges and universities, and science educators that takes place through the Iowa Academy of Science will be a catalyst. I support the growth and future endeavors of science in Iowa.
